Machine vision is the application of computer vision to industry and manufacturing. Cameras are used that allow computers to "see," inspect parts, and communicate with in-plant systems. Their processors are programmed to inspect parts in-line, or can be used to guide robots, and are also used to help automate factories. Image acquisition works in a similar way to typical digital camera's; that is they take a picture and digitize it into pixels that the computers' processor and software can analyze. The entire camera/computer package can be smaller than your hand, or in some cases a standard PC can be used along with with remote camera's. Machine vision systems in factories have only been applied wide-scale in the last decade, as costs have dropped and the technology has been perfected.
